Twelve miners were killed and eight others were rescued after an explosion in a coal mine in southwestern Pakistan .

According to Reuters, the chief inspector of mines in Balochistan province, Abdul Ghani Baloch, said: “The rescue operation has just been completed.” Pointing out that 20 miners were inside the mine when the methane gas explosion occurred during the night.

He added that rescue teams recovered 12 bodies, while the survivors were taken to the hospital.

Coal deposits are found in the western regions of Pakistan which are located near the Afghan border and mine accidents are common there, mainly due to gas accumulation.

Trade union officials said in the past that miners complained that a lack of safety equipment and poor working conditions were the main causes of frequent accidents.
