At least 12 people were killed and 20 others injured after a passenger train collided with a bus in eastern Bangladesh, according to local media reports.

The accident occurred in the Comilla region, east of the capital Dhaka, when the train struck the bus at an unguarded railway crossing during the night.

Officials cited by The Daily Star said the train dragged the bus for several hundred meters before coming to a stop, while footage aired on state television showed the vehicle completely destroyed by the impact.

Authorities have launched an urgent investigation into the cause of the crash. Railways Minister Habibur Rashid instructed officials to determine the circumstances of the incident and identify those responsible.

Train accidents are relatively common in Bangladesh, particularly at unprotected crossings, due to weak safety measures and the lack of effective warning systems, raising ongoing concerns about rail transport safety in the country.
