At least 11 people have been killed and two others critically injured in an overnight attack by Islamist militants in northeast Nigeria, in the latest surge of violence in the region.

The assault took place late Tuesday in Bobajo, a remote area on the edge of the Sambisa Forest in Borno State, a long-standing center of the country’s insurgency.

Residents reported that homes were set on fire during the attack, forcing villagers to flee as gunmen stormed the area. Victims were buried on Wednesday following the deadly raid.

Local sources blamed the assault on Boko Haram, which has been behind years of violence in the region.

A local government official indicated that the village had previously been considered relatively safe, underscoring growing concerns about the spread of insecurity even into areas once seen as secure.

Nigeria has faced a prolonged and complex security crisis, with armed groups continuing to carry out attacks on civilians, particularly in the northeast, despite ongoing military operations.
