The office of the mayor of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil has reported that over 11 people have tragically lost their lives due to heavy rainfall in the city.

The downpour has caused major highways to be submerged and disrupted both ground transportation and subway services.

The office stated that "heavy rainfall in the northern region of Rio de Janeiro and its adjacent suburbs has led to flooding on major highways, paralyzing public transportation and resulting in casualties."

The causes of these fatalities are attributed to landslides and electric shocks resulting from power line disruptions in the city. The search for victims is ongoing.

Mayor Eduardo Paes has declared a state of emergency in the city and urged residents not to leave their homes unless necessary until the situation in the area returns to normalcy.
