At least ten people lost their lives in a devastating road accident in northern Nigeria when a tanker truck collided with multiple vehicles and burst into flames.
The incident occurred on a highway near Nyanya, on the outskirts of the capital, Abuja.
According to Nonso Ezekiel, spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the accident caused severe traffic congestion, complicating rescue operations. While officials have yet to confirm the exact number of casualties, a journalist at the scene counted at least ten bodies.
The accident happened when the driver of a tanker truck carrying compressed natural gas lost control and crashed into several vehicles.
The gas tank then exploded, triggering a massive fire that spread to other vehicles in the area.
Deadly road accidents are common in Nigeria due to poor road conditions, reckless driving, and poorly maintained vehicles. Authorities have urged stricter safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
