At least 10 people have died after heavy rains triggered flash floods and landslides across Kenya, police said, as authorities warn of worsening conditions.
Seven of the deaths were reported in eastern regions, while infrastructure damage has been recorded in several areas. Two bridges were hit in Kwale County and Kitui County, while landslides were reported in parts of Elgeyo-Marakwet County.
Kenya’s rainy season, which typically runs from March to May, has intensified this year, with saturated ground significantly increasing the risk of flooding and landslides.
The Kenya Red Cross said there are unconfirmed reports of missing people and stranded families in Mukuru kwa Njenga, a densely populated area of Nairobi, where emergency relief operations are ongoing.
Meanwhile, the government has declared a state of high alert in the Lower Tana River Basin, warning that rising water levels in the Seven Forks Dams system have increased the risk of further flooding.
Authorities say rescue and relief efforts are continuing as the situation remains critical.
