A deadly shooting in the small town of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, has left at least 10 people dead, including the suspected gunwoman, and dozens injured, according to Canadian authorities.
The attack unfolded in Tumbler Ridge, a remote town of about 2,300 residents located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.
The community is known for outdoor tourism due to its proximity to mountain trails and a geological park.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed that more than 25 people were injured in the shooting, including two victims who sustained life-threatening injuries, while others suffered minor wounds. ()
While several Canadian media outlets reported that the attacker was a woman, police have not publicly confirmed the suspect’s identity or released personal details.
Authorities said the first emergency report was received early in the afternoon, indicating an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.
When officers arrived and searched the school, they discovered multiple victims shot inside the building along with the suspect.
Another victim later died while being transported to hospital.
Police later identified a second crime scene at a nearby home, where two additional victims were found dead.
Investigators believe the location is connected to the school attack. According to preliminary reports, the suspect died from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed deep sorrow over what he described as a “horrific shooting.”
He also cancelled a planned trip to Europe, where he was scheduled to attend the Munich Security Conference.
The shooting forced authorities to issue an emergency alert across Tumbler Ridge and surrounding areas as residents were urged to shelter in place.
Police later lifted the emergency alert after securing the area.
Investigations into the motive and circumstances surrounding the attack remain ongoing.
