A weekend trip meant for leisure ended in tragedy for a group of university students in Colombia when their bus crashed on a bridge in the western region of the country.

According to officials, the collision killed at least 10 people and left 11 others injured.

The Humboldt University of Armenia, which organised the trip, confirmed the deaths and injuries among its students, teachers, and staff. In a statement, the university declared two days of mourning to honour the victims.

Initial investigations reveal that the bus was carrying 26 people from Tolima to Quindío when the driver lost control.

Police Commander Luis Fernando Atuesta reported that the bus slammed into barriers on the edge of the Helicoide Bridge, flinging several passengers from the vehicle.

Tragically, some of the passengers fell from the bridge into the ravine below. Authorities are still working to determine the exact cause of the accident and have launched a full investigation into the incident.

University Director Diego Fernando Jaramillo López confirmed that the vehicle was transporting 22 students, two teachers, and one communications officer.
