At least 10 people were killed and 10 others were wounded in a shooting in a township near Johannesburg, South Africa’s largest city and economic hub, police said on Sunday.
According to a police statement cited by local media, the victims were shot by unknown gunmen in what appeared to be random attacks in the streets. Emergency services responded to multiple scenes, while the injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Police said the motive for the attack remains unclear, and no arrests have been made so far. Authorities have launched a manhunt for the suspects and opened an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Violent crime, including gun-related incidents, remains a persistent challenge in parts of South Africa, particularly in densely populated townships. Officials have urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement and report any information that could assist in the investigation.
The identities of the victims have not yet been released, pending notification of their families.
