A traffic stop in Columbia County, Georgia, turned deadly on Saturday evening when two sheriff’s deputies were shot, resulting in the death of one officer and the hospitalization of another.
According to local authorities, the fatal shooting occurred around 6:30 PM local time. Both officers were conducting a routine traffic checkpoint when gunfire erupted.
One deputy was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second deputy was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The Columbia County Sheriff's Office identified the suspect as an individual operating from a camper located near mile marker 194 off Belair Road.
Law enforcement agencies, including aerial support with helicopters and drones, launched an immediate manhunt to capture the suspect.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp addressed the incident through a public statement, expressing his condolences and emphasizing support for the affected families and law enforcement community.
