Mauritania's Minister of Economy, Abdel Salam Ould Mohamed Saleh, has reported that 1.2 million individuals in the nation are grappling with severe food insecurity.

During a roundtable presentation of this year's national response plan, the minister highlighted findings from the November assessments of the Harmonized Framework and the Ministry of Livestock's estimates.

These findings indicate that 240,000 people at risk of severe food insecurity will benefit from cash transfers during the summer season.

Furthermore, 1.2 million individuals suffering from acute food insecurity require food distributions to prevent further vulnerability.

The Mauritanian minister elaborated that the total estimated cost for this year's response plan is projected at around $58 million, underscoring the urgent need for interventions to protect both the population and the livestock assets from the dire consequences of food scarcity.
