A fatal car attack in the city center of Mannheim, southwest Germany, has left one person dead and several others injured, German police confirmed on Monday.
Authorities have sealed off the area, citing an "imminent deadly threat," and urged residents to stay indoors. A large-scale police operation is underway, though officials have yet to release further details.
According to local newspaper Mannheimer Morgen, eyewitnesses reported a vehicle plowing into a crowd in Mannheim, causing multiple casualties.
Online news outlet Mannheim24 described the vehicle as a black SUV that accelerated toward the gathering, leaving several people critically wounded.
The incident occurred amid carnival festivities, where large crowds had gathered in various regions of Germany, including Rhineland.
Germany has been on high alert following a series of violent incidents, including a car ramming attack in Magdeburg in December, another in Munich last month, and a stabbing in Mannheim in May 2024.
Security concerns have intensified ahead of the carnival season, with German authorities increasing police presence.
Social media accounts linked to ISIS had reportedly called for attacks in major cities such as Cologne and Nuremberg, prompting heightened vigilance.
