A tragic explosion at a party in Knin, southern Croatia, resulted in the death of one individual and left four others injured, including a minor, according to Croatian police reports on Sunday.

The incident occurred when a 25-year-old man reportedly took a hand grenade to the party, handing it to another person.

A mishandling of the grenade led to the explosion, fatally injuring one person and wounding four others.

Medical sources confirmed that the injured victims, who were rushed to the Knin Hospital, are in stable condition.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the possession and handling of the grenade.

This incident comes amid ongoing efforts by Croatian law enforcement to reduce gun violence and the illegal possession of weapons.

For several years, Croatian police have been running an initiative called "Fewer Weapons, Fewer Tragedies," aimed at encouraging citizens to voluntarily surrender unlicensed firearms and explosives.

Since the beginning of 2024, the police in the Šibenik-Knin County, which includes Knin, have recorded 5,091 instances of voluntary weapon and explosive submissions.

As part of this initiative, authorities have collected 33 firearms, nearly 5,000 rounds of ammunition, 32 explosive devices, and over 18 kilograms of explosives.

In addition, security operations have led to the seizure of 60 firearms, almost 1,000 rounds of ammunition, 134 explosive devices, and 1.5 kilograms of explosives.

These efforts reflect a wider commitment by the Croatian government to improve public safety by reducing access to dangerous weaponry.
