The US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, was placed on lockdown Thursday after reports of threats against the military school prompted the evacuation of a building, officials confirmed. One person was injured in the incident.
Lieutenant Naud Limar, spokesperson for the Naval Support Activity Annapolis base, said in a statement that the injured individual was airlifted to a hospital and is currently in stable condition.
Security forces from the Naval Support Activity and local law enforcement agencies responded to reports of suspicious activity on campus. Limar noted that the lockdown was implemented as a precautionary measure.
Police were seen stationed near Bancroft Hall, the iconic residence that houses midshipmen at the Naval Academy. With more than 1,600 dormitory rooms, Bancroft Hall is the largest single dormitory in the world, according to the academy’s website.
Authorities have not released details about the nature of the threats, and the investigation is ongoing.
The Naval Academy, one of the most prestigious military institutions in the United States, trains future officers for the Navy and Marine Corps.
