A truck explosion outside a shopping center in Guayaquil, Ecuador’s largest city, left one person dead and several others injured on Tuesday, according to the country’s Attorney General’s Office.
Interior Minister John Reimberg confirmed that a second vehicle loaded with explosives was discovered nearby but did not detonate.
Authorities swiftly intervened to neutralize the device, preventing further casualties.
Surveillance footage released by officials showed the vehicle engulfed in flames moments before the explosion, with large plumes of fire and smoke rising into the air.
Security forces have cordoned off the area as investigations continue into the cause of the blast and those responsible.
Residents have been urged to avoid the vicinity while forensic and counterterrorism teams carry out their work.
