1 Dead, Several Injured in Car-Ramming Attack in Tokyo

A man driving a stolen vehicle plowed into pedestrians in central Tokyo on Monday, killing one person and seriously injuring a woman, according to Japanese media reports.

The suspect fled the scene but was later arrested by police.

Authorities have not yet issued an official statement, though police said updates will be released as soon as possible.

Japan’s Kyodo News reported that the victim who died was a man in his 80s, who succumbed to his injuries several hours after the incident. Eleven others were injured, including a woman in her 20s who suffered severe trauma and remains unconscious, according to Nippon TV.

The stolen vehicle reportedly veered off the roadway into a pedestrian path, striking multiple people before coming to a stop. The driver attempted to escape but was apprehended shortly afterward. Police are investigating the case as a suspected hit-and-run involving a stolen car.

The incident occurred on a national holiday in Japan, when many streets are typically more crowded than usual.
