A powerful earthquake off Indonesia’s coast triggered small tsunami waves, killing at least one person and causing damage to homes and buildings, officials said Thursday.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake measured 7.4 in magnitude and lasted between 10 and 20 seconds. Its epicenter was located about 127 kilometers west of Ternate Island in North Maluku at a depth of 35 kilometers.
Tsunami waves were recorded within minutes at several monitoring stations. Wave heights reached around 20 centimeters in Bitung and 30 centimeters in West Halmahera.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said additional small waves could affect parts of Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Papua New Guinea, but there is no threat to Hawaii, Guam, or other distant Pacific islands.
Authorities continue to assess damage and monitor aftershocks following the seismic event.
