A formidable and sizable typhoon is steadily approaching Japan's southern island prefecture of Okinawa, resulting in the unfortunate death of a 90-year-old man.
The country's weather agency has issued warnings of potent winds and storm tides.
The elderly man tragically died in a hospital after being trapped under his collapsed garage at his residence in Okinawa. Authorities suspect that the collapse was caused by the strong winds accompanying the typhoon.
Known as Typhoon Khanun, it is the sixth of the season and is expected to maintain its strength while gradually slowing down in the East China Sea.
However, Okinawa is likely to experience continued storms and high waves throughout Thursday and beyond, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
As of noon on Wednesday, the typhoon was located southwest of Kume Island, moving west-northwest at a speed of 10 kilometers per hour. At its center, the storm held an atmospheric pressure of 935 hectopascals and packed winds reaching up to 234 kph.
Additionally, the typhoon is anticipated to bring torrential rain, with rainfall reaching up to 200 millimeters in Okinawa and 120 millimeters in Amami-Oshima Island, situated in the southwestern prefecture of Kagoshima, over the next 24 hours until noon on Thursday.
