A devastating wildfire in Ofunato, Iwate Prefecture, has claimed one life and destroyed more than 80 homes as it continues to spread uncontrollably.
The blaze, which erupted on Wednesday, has already scorched over 600 hectares, prompting the evacuation of about 3,300 residents, local authorities confirmed on Thursday.
Firefighters worked overnight to combat the flames, while Self-Defense Forces helicopters were deployed at dawn to assist from the air.
Emergency reinforcements, including 690 firefighters from eight neighboring prefectures, have been dispatched to contain the disaster.
The Japanese government has set up an emergency coordination center at the prime minister’s office. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba urged ministries to collaborate with local authorities to support affected residents.
Power outages have impacted 500 homes, schools and kindergartens remain closed, and a section of the local train line has been suspended.
Eyewitnesses described the fire’s rapid advance, with 87-year-old evacuee Sadao Kumagai recounting how the flames spread at an “unbelievable speed.”
Strong winds and dry conditions hindered aerial firefighting efforts on Wednesday, exacerbating the crisis.
