An explosion at Tehran University has left one person dead and four others injured on Thursday, according to Iranian emergency services.
Local media quoted Jalal Maleki, spokesperson for Tehran’s fire department, as saying the blast was likely caused by a hydrogen cylinder inside the engineering and technology faculty laboratory in the Amirabad district of the capital.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud blast near the university campus. Maleki confirmed that the explosion triggered a fire, though it has since been brought under control.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the incident as safety concerns grow over hazardous materials stored in academic and research institutions.
