A knife attack in the eastern French city of Mulhouse has left one civilian dead and three police officers wounded.
The suspect, a 37-year-old Algerian national, was swiftly apprehended and remains in custody.
The attack unfolded near a canal-side market where the suspect first attempted to target local police officers.
France's anti-terror prosecutors unit (PNAT) has launched an investigation into the incident, classifying it as murder and attempted murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise.
Authorities have confirmed that the assailant was listed on France’s FSPRT terrorism prevention watchlist, a system designed to track and prevent radicalization.
The list was introduced after the 2015 terrorist attacks on Charlie Hebdo and a Jewish supermarket in Paris.
French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau strongly criticized Algeria, stating that France had attempted 10 times to deport the suspect but was repeatedly blocked by Algerian authorities.
