A powerful explosion rocked Baghdad's eastern Sadr City district, killing one citizen and wounding 12, local media reported on Thursday.
Sources added that the explosion, heard in Baghdad’s Sadr City area, in the Habibiya neighborhood, blew out five cars. Initial information indicate that an explosive device was placed inside one of the cars.
Photos and video, shared on social media, showed thick black smoke billowing from an outdoor market for second-hand goods as ambulances rushed to the scene.
The blast comes a day after an explosives-laden drone targeted Erbil International Airport in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq.
The road leading to the US Consulate in Erbil was closed, and warning sirens sounded inside the consulate, media reports said.
A previously unknown Shiite militia claimed responsibility for the drone attack that took place late on Wednesday.
