For the second year, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) will celebrate Earth Hour virtually on Saturday due to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Millions around the world are asked to switch the unnecessary lights in their homes for an hour starting from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm in local time in a call for respecting nature.

The first time for celebrating such an hour was back in 2007 through the first official meeting of the WWF in Sydney. The meeting saw the participation of 180 countries which decided to switch their lights on the last Saturday in every March.

Moreover, famous destinations around the world were required to switch their lights off to raise public awareness of the climate change crisis.

However, this year's celebration will go in a different way by spotting the light on Earth. The event organizers said: "Put the spotlight on our planet and make it the most watched video in the world on March 27 (or beyond!) so that as many people as possible hear our message."

In the same context, WWF Director General Marco Lambertini called in a press release: "Protecting nature is our moral responsibility but losing it also increases our vulnerability to pandemics, accelerates climate change, and threatens our food security."

He added: "We must stop taking nature for granted, respect its intrinsic value, and — importantly — value the crucial services it provides to our health, wellbeing and economy."
