In a statement that has elicited various concerns and discussions, Piotr Muller, the spokesperson for the Polish government, hinted towards a potential termination of social assistance and benefits for Ukrainian refugees by 2024.

Muller clarified that the existing regulations, which are temporary in nature, are under scrutiny and a decision regarding their continuation or cessation will be made in the coming year. "I hope that the topic of additional temporary benefits will be closed," he expressed.

Currently, there is a significant population of Ukrainian refugees in Poland, ranging between one million and one and a half million, who have been availing of these social aids. The assistance envelopes several facets, including employment rights, social benefits, housing cost aid, complimentary medical care, and car insurance.

The Prime Minister of Poland, Mateusz Morawiecki, previously urged Ukraine to exhibit gratitude towards Poland for providing refuge to millions of Ukrainians. According to him, Poland has extended more assistance to Ukraine than any other country.

In a move that has been observed with scrutiny, Polish authorities, in September, closed a refugee reception center for Ukrainians near the capital city of Warsaw.

Reem Alsalem, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, raised another pressing issue concerning Ukrainian refugee women, who she stated, are facing serious risks of becoming victims of human trafficking and sexual exploitation in Europe.

This scenario opens a myriad of challenges and reflections on the refugee crisis, Poland’s responsibilities, and the overarching impacts on Ukrainian refugees, particularly women and girls. Addressing these concerns while ensuring the security, stability, and welfare of refugees in Poland has become a vital focus for discussions among governments, human rights organizations, and the international community.
