The World Health Organization (WHO) in Egypt and the Embassy of Japan have inked an $8.3 million agreement to bolster Egypt's capacity to respond to the healthcare needs of the injured and sick from Gaza receiving treatment in Egypt.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Egypt's Minister of International Cooperation, Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, WHO's Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, Hanan Balkhy, the Ambassador of Japan to Egypt, Oka Hiroshi, the spokesperson for the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population, Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, and the WHO Representative in Egypt, Naeema Al Gasseer.

Al Gasseer highlighted that the grant provided by the Japanese government, amounting to $8.3 million over two years, would allocate 80% of its funds to medical settings and medical devices, especially those required for surgeries, laboratories, and medical conferences.

She mentioned that WHO is collaborating with the Egyptian Ministry of Health to enhance the level of services offered to Palestinians.

Balkhy expressed profound gratitude to the Japanese government for their contribution to WHO's multi-country regional funding appeal launched to address the Gaza crisis.

She appreciated the Egyptian government for providing the highest level of care to the people of Gaza free of charge, emphasizing that Egypt's generosity and readiness to play a pivotal role in the health response to this crisis highlight the close cooperation needed now more than ever to promote solidarity across the region.

Despite challenges, Balkhy reaffirmed the commitment to saving lives and recognized the importance of collaboration in providing viable solutions to those in need.

By working together, she believes that collective expertise, resources, and determination can make a significant impact.

She expressed confidence in the ongoing support and serious steps towards achieving the shared goals of enhancing health, security, and prosperity for all.
