Deadpool 3 was officially confirmed in December 2019, with Ryan Reynolds reprising as the merc with a big mouth.
The 2016's Deadpool and its 2018 follow-up Deadpool 2 were huge box office, earning over $1.5 billion worldwide. It was produced by 20th Century Fox before it was acquired by Disney.
Following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, Deadpool and the X-Men franchise were folded under the Marvel Studios umbrella, which would make the first Deadpool movie to be produced under the Marvel.
Now, the debate is still out there on whether Deadpool 3 will be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as whether if the movie will happen eventually, especially since Disney rarely releases R-rated theatrical movies, something which has left many wondering what the future of the Deadpool franchise.
Deadpool co-creator and comic book legend Rob Liefeld was widely expected to return to work on the franchise’s third installment.
However, Liefeld provided a rather troubling update regarding Deadpool 3, suggesting he may not be involved with the movie at all.
On May 12, Liefeld took to Twitter with a Deadpool 3 update, which included a side-by-side image of Deadpool from “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” and Deadpool from the 2016 movie— hinting that Marvel had not called him for Deadpool 3 and his post was a reminder of what Deadpool looked like when the creator wasn’t involved.
Liefeld opened up about the future of Deadpool franchise under Marvel, pointing out that he was not very optimistic about it would be an understatement.
He implied that he did not trust Kevin Feige’s plans and that the days of real-deal Deadpool movies were behind us.
Deadpool 3 may never happen
Despite the 2016's Deadpool and its 2018 follow-up Deadpool 2 were huge box office, earning over $1.5 billion worldwide, Liefeld revealed in new remarks that he is not sure a third movie will happen.
Liefeld stated that he is not sure a third movie will happen, but he would be 'fine' if a third movie didn't happen.
"You know what? There may not be another Deadpool, and I’m fine. Because I have to live with the fact that I had two amazing experiences, two movies I’m extremely proud of, I love knowing everybody on those movies." Liefeld added.
There is no official word on whether Deadpool 3 will be moving forward without Liefeld’s input, only time will tell how everything plays out behind the scenes.
