The United States and Venezuela have reached an agreement to release 10 American prisoners in exchange for the release of a close associate of President Nicolás Maduro.
US officials stated that President Joe Biden made a "very difficult decision" to release Alex Saab, who was a close associate of the socialist president and has been accused by the United States of money laundering on Maduro's behalf.
In a statement, President Biden confirmed that the ten Americans are "coming home." US officials had previously indicated that Washington would release businessman Alex Saab.
In return, Caracas will release 10 American citizens and 20 Venezuelan political prisoners. Additionally, they will repatriate a fugitive named "Faith Leonard," who was involved in a major corruption scandal within the U.S. Navy.
This prisoner exchange follows the United States' decision in October to ease sanctions on Venezuelan oil and gas, following an agreement between Maduro's government and the opposition to hold elections.
