SEE-August9: On the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, UN Secretary General António Guterres said yesterday in his message that Indigenous peoples have a profound spiritual connection to their lands and resources.
Migration might be a good opportunity for them, yet it carries inherent risks; "Many indigenous migrants find themselves living in unsafe conditions in urban areas. Women and girls experience disproportionately high rates of trafficking and other forms of violence. Youth are faced with complex questions regarding their identities and values," Guterres added.
There are 370 million indigenous living across 90 countries; they are estimated 5 percent of the world’s population, according to UN News Centre.
UN Secretary-General called for cooperation to safeguard the identity and traditional practices of the indigenous peoples whose territories are pided by international borders.
Guterres referred to member State who are expected to adopt a global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration later this year which will establish an international framework for regional and global cooperation.
Guterres called for a full realization of the United Nations declaration on the rights of indigenous peoples and stressed on the importance of respecting their rights across the world.
"The rights to self-determination and to traditional lands, territories and resources. And, wherever they live, let us ensure that indigenous peoples enjoy recognition for their contributions and the opportunity to thrive and prosper in peace on a healthy planet," Guterres explained.
