US Launches Website to Offer Discounted Prescription Drugs

The Trump administration on Thursday launched the “Trump Rx” website, aimed at helping Americans access prescription medications at lower prices, addressing growing concerns over healthcare costs and the rising cost of living.

Speaking at the site’s unveiling, President Donald Trump said: “You will save a fortune, and this is also very good for healthcare overall.”

Hosted by the government, the platform does not sell drugs directly. Instead, it guides users to manufacturers’ websites where prescriptions can be purchased, and offers coupons redeemable at pharmacies. The site initially features more than 40 medications, including popular weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy.

The initiative is part of a broader effort by the administration to demonstrate action on high costs. Affordability has become a political vulnerability for Trump and Republican allies ahead of the November midterm elections, with many Americans concerned about housing, groceries, utilities, and other essential expenses.

Trump emphasised that lower prices were made possible through his pressure on drug companies, insisting they charge the same rates in the United States as in other countries. He added that prescription costs abroad are expected to rise as a result.

The website launch took place at the White House and lasted approximately 20 minutes.

The rollout follows multiple delays for undisclosed reasons. Last fall, Dr. Mohammad Oz, head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, informed Trump that the platform would provide consumer pricing before the end of the year. A previous launch, originally scheduled for late January, was also postponed.
