The U.S. Embassy in Cairo has issued a security alert for American citizens in Egypt, urging heightened vigilance amid rising regional tensions linked to developments involving Iran.
In the advisory dated April 7, 2026, the embassy warned that the security environment across the region remains “complex” and could change rapidly. While Egyptian authorities continue to provide effective security protection, the alert noted that extremist groups and Iran-aligned actors have expressed interest in planning attacks in the region.
The embassy added that Iran has specifically issued threats targeting American-affiliated educational institutions across the Middle East, raising concerns about potential risks to universities and similar facilities.
According to the alert, locations that could be considered potential targets include religious sites, government buildings, diplomatic missions, tourist attractions, transportation hubs, shopping centres, restaurants, resorts, checkpoints, and urban areas in Cairo.
The embassy advised U.S. citizens to remain alert, maintain situational awareness, and exercise caution, particularly in places associated with the United States. It also urged avoiding demonstrations and large gatherings, keeping a low profile, monitoring local media, and following instructions from Egyptian authorities.
Additionally, the embassy encouraged American nationals to enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), which provides real-time security updates and facilitates contact in case of emergencies.
