The US Department of Defense is evaluating options to bolster its military presence in the Middle East following the assassination of Hezbollah’s Secretary General, Hassan Nasrallah, by Israeli forces.

According to US officials, this development has heightened concerns about potential retaliatory actions by Iran or Hezbollah, prompting the Pentagon to explore an increase in both personnel and equipment in the region.

A report from NBC News revealed that military officials have presented US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin with several options for reinforcing the region's defenses.

Austin has discussed these military strategies with President Joe Biden and other top national security officials. While no final decisions have been made, Austin retains the authority to deploy additional forces to the Middle East if necessary.

Currently, the US has around 40,000 troops stationed in the region, a figure already higher than earlier this year when Iran responded to Israeli actions.

However, American officials have indicated that existing deployments could be extended, or additional air defense capabilities might be introduced to prepare for possible retaliatory strikes.

The White House confirmed that President Biden held a call with Vice President Kamala Harris and his national security team to assess the evolving situation in the Middle East.

They reviewed the status of US military units in the area and discussed ongoing diplomatic efforts to coordinate with regional allies.

The Pentagon has also expressed readiness to support the evacuation of civilians from the region if necessary.

While there has not been a significant surge in requests for assistance from U.S. citizens at this time, the situation is being closely monitored, and plans are in place should the need for evacuation arise.

There is speculation that the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman, currently en route to Europe, could be redirected to the Middle East if conditions worsen. While no official orders have been made, the carrier could quickly be reassigned to U.S. Central Command if required.
