UNHCR has reported that there are currently 800,000 refugees and asylum-seekers registered in Egypt, with Sudanese individuals constituting the largest demographic, followed by Syrians. The majority of these refugees reside in Greater Cairo and Alexandria.
Since the outbreak of conflict in Sudan, over 760,000 individuals have sought assistance from UNHCR Egypt. In response to the urgent needs of these new arrivals, UNHCR is enhancing its provision of cash assistance and registration services.
In a recent statement, UNHCR indicated that the number of registered refugees and asylum-seekers in Egypt has nearly tripled compared to the previous year, largely due to significant conflicts in neighboring regions. Refugees are primarily living in urban areas across major cities, with a notable influx from Sudan.
The agency has noted an eightfold increase in the registration of Sudanese refugees since the conflict began, predominantly affecting women and children. Additionally, in light of the crisis in Gaza, UNHCR has provided essential supplies such as water, clothing, blankets, jerry cans, and sleeping mats to the region, as well as cash assistance to medical evacuees from Gaza currently in Egypt, facilitated through the ERC.
