UNESCO, EMPC Celebrate Egypt’s Achievements in Preservation of Audio-visual Heritage

A hybrid celebration event of Egypt’s achievements in the preservation of audio-visual heritage was held on Tuesday in the EMPC premises, Cairo.

The hybrid event, entitled: “Celebration of Achievements in World Audio-visual Heritage and Promoting International Cooperation”, was organized by the Egyptian Media Production City (EMPC) and UNESCO.

The event shed light on the UNESCO Convention for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions as well as the Recommendation Concerning the Preservation of, and Access to Documentary Heritage Including in Digital Form, according to a statement released by UNESCO.

The day aimed at shedding light on the achievements and experiences of the Egyptian Film Restoration Center, a presidential initiative hosted in the EMPC, in the preservation of approximately 3000 audio-visual documents in high-quality digital films reaching up to 4k and 6k resolution, which makes it suitable for all types of screening through electronic platforms, televisions, and cinemas; preserving the right to access for the present and future generations to review and reflect back on their history,  said UNESCO.

The celebration highlighted the influential role of Egypt’s audiovisual heritage and the potential opportunities for UNESCO and other national, regional and global organizations to safeguard documentary heritage, especially audio-visual heritage in Egypt and the Arab region.

In addition this, it brought together institutions and experts across Africa, the Arab world, Asia Pacific as well as Latin America, and the Caribbean, in a bid to enhance awareness, knowledge sharing, and collaboration on documentary heritage.

The activities of the celebration provided also a detailed presentation of the establishment of the Egyptian Film Restoration Center and its achievement and future plans, as well as raise awareness of practical approaches to the national implementation of international standards advocated through UNESCO Memory of the World Program and the Organization’s Cultural Conventions.

Addressing the event, UNESCO Regional Director and Representative Dr. Abdulaziz Almuzaini spoke of the Egypt's active participation in enhancing Arab and world audio-visual industry.

Other speaker at the event included the Chairman of EMPC- Dr. Abdel-Fattah El-Gebaly, Director of Institutional Repositories & Integrated Library Systems Department Information Communication Technology Sector, Bibliotheca Alexandrina- Dr. Ahmed Samir, Assistant Secretary-General, UNESCO National Commission for Egypt- Mr. El Sayed El Abassy, and Dr. Hany Aboul Hassan, Advisor to the Chairman national experts : Chairman & CEO, Gemini Africa- Mr Adly Thoma, Head of  Library Sector, Bibliotheca Alexandrina & Member of UNESCO IAC- Dina Youssef, International Experts: Chief of  Documentary Heritage Unit, UNESCO- Dr. Fackson Banda, Prof. Fernando Osorio Alarcón, School of Conservation & Curator of the National Cineteca, President of Memory of the World Regional Committee for Africa- Mr. Papa Momar Diop and Former Secretary-General, MOWPAC  : Dr. Ray Edmondson as well as Dr Akatsuki Takahashi, UNESCO Culture Advisor and Dr Paul Hector, UNESCO Advisor for Communication and Information.

It's worth mentioning that the event participants watched a number of documentaries on the history and heritage of Egyptian and Arab cinema industry also.
