The United Nations has welcomed the arrival of humanitarian aid in Sudan’s South Kordofan State, after a UNICEF convoy successfully delivered supplies to the city of Dilling.
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric told reporters on Monday that the delivery marked “the first large-scale aid operation by any UN agency to this region since October 2024.” He added that the convoy would continue its journey to Kadugli, the state capital.
According to the UN, more than 120,000 vulnerable people in Dilling and Kadugli are expected to benefit from the supplies. Dujarric warned that humanitarian needs in the area have reached “catastrophic levels,” following months of siege that has left local communities cut off from vital assistance.
He stressed that the UN and its partners remain committed to delivering support “whenever conditions allow,” but highlighted that insecurity, logistical challenges, and severe funding shortages continue to hinder relief efforts.
Dujarric also reiterated the UN’s call on all parties to the conflict to respect international humanitarian law, ensure safe and unhindered access for aid workers, and prioritize the protection of civilians.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been gripped by a war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, a conflict that has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions across the country.
