"Climate change becomes out of control," the UN chief said, as an analysis of the data showed that average global temperatures in the seven days to Wednesday were the hottest week on record, according to The Guardia, a UK daily newspaper.

"If we insist on delaying the major measures required, I think we are heading towards a catastrophic situation, as the last two temperature records show," said Antonio Guterres, referring to global temperature records set on Monday and Tuesday.

The average global air temperature rose by 17.18°C on Tuesday, according to data compiled by the US National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), surpassing the record of 17.01°C reached on Monday.

However, scientists agree that those freak rises in temperatures indicate that climate change has reached uncharted territory and that the increasing heat from the generated global warming combined with the return of El Niño will lead to record-high temperatures.
