UN Secretary-General to Attend TICAD 7 in Japan

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will visit Japan next week to take part in the seventh Tokyo international conference on African development (TICAD 7), according to UN official spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

“During his visit, Guterres will meet Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and a number of senior officials,” the spokesman added. "Moreover, it is scheduled that the U.N. chief will hold talks with Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono."

Japan's visit is part of a trip that begins Friday, when Guterres will fly to France to attend the Group of Seven summit. He will also visit the Democratic Republic of Congo before returning to New York on Sept. 3.

Noteworthy, (TICAD 7) will be held from August 28-30, 2019 in Yokohama, Japan, under the theme “Advancing Africa’s Development through People, Technology and Innovation”

The summit is expected to witness a distinguished African representation. About 40 African countries will take part in this event including: Egypt, Cameron, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Chad, South Africa, Algeria and others.

TICAD is considered one of the most important summits and gatherings that contribute to the development of the African continent.

It plays a major role in facilitating and promoting high-level political dialogue between African leaders and development partners on issues related to economic growth, trade and investment, sustainable development, human security, peace and stability.
