The United Nations General Assembly on Friday voted to extend the mandate of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) for another three years in New York.

The resolution received broad support, with 151 countries voting in favor, 9 opposing, and 14 abstaining.

In response, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini welcomed the decision, describing it as a reflection of global solidarity with Palestinian refugees. He emphasized that the resolution represents a recognition of the international community’s responsibility to support the humanitarian and developmental needs of Palestinian refugees while awaiting a just and lasting solution to their decades-long plight, according to an official UNRWA statement.

Lazzarini further stressed that the vote must now translate into a genuine commitment from member states, ensuring the provision of sufficient resources to enable UNRWA to fulfill its mandate effectively and achieve its humanitarian and developmental objectives.
