United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres marked the first anniversary of the October 7 conflict with a renewed call for peace, urging all parties to seize what he described as a critical opportunity presented by a new proposal from former U.S. President Donald J. Trump.
“The recent proposal by President Trump presents an opportunity that must be seized to bring this tragic conflict to an end,” Guterres said in a statement released on Monday. “A permanent ceasefire and a credible political process are essential to prevent further bloodshed and pave the way for peace. International law must be respected.”
Guterres reaffirmed that the United Nations “remains unwavering in its commitment to support peace,” emphasizing the organization’s readiness to assist in implementing any steps that could lead to a sustainable resolution.
“On this solemn anniversary, let us honour the memory of all the victims by working for the only path forward: a just and lasting peace, in which Israelis, Palestinians, and all the peoples of the region live side by side in security, dignity and mutual respect,” he added.
The Secretary-General’s remarks come as international efforts intensify to end the conflict in Gaza and relaunch a viable political process between Israelis and Palestinians, amid cautious optimism surrounding the latest U.S.-brokered initiative.
