UN Calls on World to Support SMEs

The UN Secretary-General António Guterres called on the international community to do more to support micro, small, and medium enterprises (SMEs) in building resilience to external shocks and pursuing sustainable business models.

He called for enhancing the cooperation with the small businesses in order to fight poverty, create jobs and safeguard livelihoods, particularly for the working poor, women, and youth.

His statements came on the sidelines of the celebrations of the International Day of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises.

Guterres referred also to the importance of these enterprises encouraged, noting that nearly 90 percent of global businesses, more than 60 percent of employment, and half of GDP worldwide.

"They are the economic lifeblood of communities around the world,” he pointed out.

The UN official commended the importance of the annual celebration of the International Day of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises, saying that this occasion aims to rescue the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and build a more prosperous and just world for all.
