The United Nations (UN) issued a report on the financial crisis in Lebanon, prepared by its Special Rapporteur Olivier de Schutter, who visited Beirut last November.

The UN envoy had examined the causes of the situation that led to the state of poverty that very large groups of Lebanese suffer from.

The report concluded that the Lebanese state and the Central Bank are responsible for the unprecedented financial crisis that has led to "unnecessary impoverishment" of the majority of the population, who are floundering to secure their minimum needs.

The report said that the misery that has befallen the Lebanese can be reversed if leadership is established that places social justice, transparency, and accountability at the top of its concerns.
