Ukraine's air force announced on Saturday that it had shot down a Russian hypersonic missile over Kyiv by using the country's recently acquired US Patriot defense systems, marking the first known time that the country has been able to intercept one of Moscow's latest missiles.

The commander of the Ukrainian Air Force, Mykola Oleshuk, said via the “Telegram” application that a “Kinjal” ballistic missile was intercepted in an evening attack on the Ukrainian capital earlier in the week.

It was also the first time that Ukraine was known to be using Patriot defense systems.

Oleshuk wrote: "Yes, we shot down the unique Kinjal. It happened during a night attack on May 4 in the sky over the Kyiv region", he said.

The Ukrainian commander pointed out that the "KH-47" missile was launched by a "Mig-K31" plane from Russian territory, and was shot down by a Patriot missile.

It is worth noting that "Kinjal" is one of the latest and most advanced Russian weapons, and the Russian army says that the range of a ballistic missile launched from the air reaches two thousand kilometres, and it flies at ten times the speed of sound, which makes it difficult to intercept it.
