Ukraine’s military on Tuesday accused Russian forces of blowing up the Nova Kakhovka dam, a major dam in a part of southern Ukraine that Moscow controls, and alerted residents further along the Dnipro River to evacuate due to potential flooding downstream, Russia’s TASS news agency reported.
The Russian news agency, quoting an informed source whose identity was not mentioned, said that the huge Nova Kakhovka dam was destroyed and that water flooded the area.
Tass added that there is no imminent danger to the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant as a result of the collapse of the Nova Kakhovka dam.
For his part, the governor of the Kherson region announced the start of evacuations of areas near the Kakhovka region in the south of the country.
"Within five hours, the water level will reach a critical level", Governor Oleksandr Prokudin said on Telegram this morning.
For its part, the Ukrainian National Security Council stated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will hold an emergency meeting of the Chiefs of Staff to discuss the repercussions of the dam bombing.
