The United Kingdom has updated its official government maps to recognize Palestine, replacing the previous reference to the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
The change appeared on several Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) web pages, including travel advice for Israel and Palestine, the list of diplomatic missions abroad, and official maps of the region.
The update follows Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s announcement on Sunday of Britain’s formal recognition of the State of Palestine. The move came alongside similar recognitions by Canada, Australia, and Portugal.
Britain is now the third G7 nation to officially recognize Palestine, after Canada and Australia.
Starmer said the decision was aimed at keeping alive the prospect of peace and a two-state solution in the face of growing instability in the Middle East. He also stated that Hamas would have no role in the government or security of a future Palestinian state.
The recognition comes just ahead of a high-level conference on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France, where several other countries are expected to announce their recognition of Palestine.
