Two South Korean air force planes collided in mid-air during training and crashed near their base on Friday, killing all four people aboard the aircraft.
The two KT-1 trainer aircraft took off from an air force base in the southeastern city of Sacheon one after another during flight training, the air force announced in a statement.
The collision took place about five minutes after the first aircraft took off and about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) south of the Sacheon base. All four were ejected from the planes but were later found dead, according to the statement said.
The air force pointed out that it will launch a task force to investigate what caused the collision, asserting that the crashes didn't cause any civilian casualties on the ground.
In the meantime, authorities said that a team has been formed to determine the cause of the crash and the extent of the damage.
“Despite their attempts at an emergency escape, three pilots died and one remains missing,” they said in a statement.
