Former US President Donald Trump has announced the creation of a new advanced missile defense system, dubbed the Golden Dome, aimed at safeguarding the United States against modern aerial threats.
The declaration was made during a speech at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, as part of Trump’s Gulf tour, which also included visits to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Trump described the Golden Dome as a cutting-edge initiative to reinforce America’s security, stating that he had officially signed an executive order to initiate its development.
The system is expected to function similarly to Israel’s Iron Dome, which the US helped fund and deploy in the early 2000s to intercept incoming rockets and missiles.
The former president pledged a record-breaking defence budget to support what he called the strongest military in the world, vowing that the United States would deliver a decisive blow to its adversaries if provoked.
While affirming his priority to resolve conflicts diplomatically, Trump emphasised he would not hesitate to use force in defence of US allies.
Earlier this year, Trump hinted at the project during a Republican Party event in Miami, where he also celebrated the appointment of Pete Hegseth as his new Secretary of Defense. He stressed the urgent need for a next-generation missile shield that would be developed entirely within the United States.
According to a CNN report citing official documents, the proposed next-generation missile defense system would be designed to counter a broad spectrum of threats, including ballistic missiles, hypersonic weapons, cruise missiles, and other advanced aerial attacks.
