U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday his intention to raise tariffs on European Union (EU) cars and trucks imported into the United States by 25%, citing what he described as the EU’s “failure to fully comply” with the existing trade agreement with Washington.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, which was reported by the Associated Press, Trump stated: “Due to the European Union’s incomplete compliance with the trade agreement we signed, I will next week increase tariffs on EU-imported cars and trucks by 25%.”

The planned increase represents a significant escalation in transatlantic trade tensions, potentially affecting automotive manufacturers across Europe and raising concerns over global supply chains. Economists warn that the move could drive up vehicle prices in the U.S. while prompting retaliatory measures from the EU.

This announcement comes amid ongoing debates in Washington over trade policy and efforts to protect U.S. industries, particularly the automotive sector, from perceived unfair competition.
