U.S. President Donald Trump said that 34 ships passed through the Strait of Hormuz in a single day, marking the highest number since Iran began restricting navigation in the strategic waterway.
Speaking in a televised address, Trump noted that additional countries are expected to join a U.S.-led naval blockade, adding that he had received a call earlier in the day from “the right people” regarding developments with Iran.
The remarks came as the United States formally implemented a maritime blockade against Iran, with more than 15 U.S. warships deployed to support the operation. Military restrictions on navigation in the Strait of Hormuz took effect at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time (14:00 GMT), significantly tightening control over one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
Trump also warned Tehran against attempting to break the blockade, signalling a firm U.S. stance amid escalating tensions in the Gulf.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a vital chokepoint for global oil shipments, and any disruption to traffic through the passage has immediate implications for international energy markets and global trade.
