Trademark Applications Increase by 67% in Egyptian Market- CAPMAS

The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) stated that the number of applications for trademarks in the Egyptian market reached 36,955 in 2021, compared to 22,106, year-on-year, an increase of 67.2%.

The Agency indicated that the number of international patent applications filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) increased by 0.9% in 2021 to reach 277,500 applications.

The number of applications submitted by Egyptians to the Egyptian Trademark Office to obtain trademarks amounted to 28,448 applications in 2021, compared to 18,735 applications, year-on-year, an increase of 51.8%.

The number of trademarks registered accounted to 10,997 in 2021, including 7,703 for Egyptians and 3,294 for other nationalities, compared to 8,324 trademarks, year-on-year, an increase of 32%.

Egyptians topped the list of granted trademarks with a total of 7,703 trademarks, representing 70%, followed by applicants from the United States with 1,054 trademarks, or 9.6%, and applicants from China with 303 trademarks, representing 2.8% of the total trademarks granted in 2021.

The Egyptian Patent Office granted 508 patents in 2021, including 63 for Egyptians, or 12.4%, and 445 for foreigners, or 87.6% of the total, compared to 495 patents in 2020, including 65 for Egyptians, or 13.1%, and 430 for foreigners, or 86.9%, an increase. of 2.6%.

With regard to patents granted according to the international classification, 130 patents were granted according to the international classification in the field of chemistry and metals, accounting for 25.6% of the total patents granted in 2021 (11.5% to Egyptians, 88.5% to foreigners), followed by patents granted in the field of humanitarian needs, amounting to 108 patents or 21.3% patent (20.4% for Egyptians, 79.6% for foreigners).

As for the patents granted to countries, applicants from the United States ranked first with a total of 96 patents, or 18.9%, and Egyptian applicants came in second place, with 63 patents or 12.4%.
