"Abdall Asi" mosque, which is one of the oldest in El Mahalla El Kubra, Al Gharbiyah province, is set to welcome back devotees and visitors after regaining its past glory and grandeur.

The classic beauty and humble style of the mosque, dating back to 1722 AD, was restored after a painstaking renovation and conservation process spread over nearly two years under the Ministry of Tourism-run "Save Our Heritage and Antiques" Project .

The restoration of the Al-Hussain Mosque is part of a thorough plan by the government to renovate Egypt's old antiques and historical sites, according to a statement released on Friday by the Ministry of Tourism.

Located at Abi Sufian street in Mahala City, the heritage structure was recreated in tune with its original character and aesthetics, according to Tourism Ministry official

"The plan of the ministry to renovate the mosque included its facade, courtyard, interior area, dilapidated walls, the wudu' (ablution) area, and ceilings, as well as the restoration of the prayers areas," Moustafa Elwaziry, Secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said.

"We supplied the mosque with wooden boards that attach to the mosque rafters, and insulating materials for floors, Elwaziry noted.

Historically, it is one of the oldest mosques in the region that dates back to 1135 Hijri.
