Sony's "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" reclaimed the top spot at the box office in its fourth week.
2018’s Oscar-winning “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" grossed $19.3 million, bringing its domestic total to $317 million.
Internationally, the sequel release earned another $22 million, making for a worldwide cume of $560.3 million.
"Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" previously notched the second biggest opening of 2023.
Pixar's "Elemental" held at second place, where it debuted last week, earning $18.5 million over the weekend, for a domestic total of $65.5 million ($121 million globally).
In further signs of a lackluster box office, "The Flash" stumbled from a disappointing bow at the top spot last week to third, grossing $15.3 million. So far, the DC superhero movie has made $87.6 million domestically ($210.9 million globally).
Meanwhile, the Jennifer Lawrence's "No Hard Feelings" opened with $15.1 million, against a budget of $45 million.
Rounding out the top 5, "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" took in $11.6 million in its third week of release, for a domestic total of $122.9 million ($341.2 million globally).
Sony’s animated sequel is benefitting from great reviews and positive word-of-mouth, as well as goodwill from its predecessor.
Audiences awarded the movie an “A” CinemaScore while critics bestowed it with a 95% average on Rotten Tomatoes.
Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson directed the PG-rated “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”, which cost $100 million.
The sequel have 240 characters and explore 6 different universes.
"Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" follows Miles Morales, (voiced by Shameik Moore), the protagonist of the original movie as he groups up with Miguel O’Hara (Oscar Isaac), “Spider-Man 2099” and Spider-Gwen aka Spider-Woman (Hailee Steinfeld).
The rest of the voice cast includes Brian Tyree Henry, Issa Rae, Jason Schwartzman, and Daniel Kaluuya.
The sequel sees Morales swinging into the Multiverse where he encounters a team of Spider-People. The team has been charged with protecting the existence of the Multiverse.
Though it becomes a sticky situation as the Spider-People clash on how to handle a powerful super-villain. Miles is left to redefine his definition of a hero.
The third movie has already been announced, "Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse", releasing on March 29, 2024. Both upcoming films' villain is said to be The Spot (Jason Schwartzman).
The runtime of the sequel clocks at 2 hours and 20 minutes. It earned a whopping $120 million worldwide in its first week.
